Padding into the room, Tristan eyed Julie standing next to the stove, pouring the broth into Tupperware containers.
“She sleeping?” Julie asked, already aware of the answer. He’d been down in her room for well over an hour, sitting in total silence, watching Kalli sleep, and she found it curious that he was taking such an interest in the injured human woman.
“You didn’t bring the soup,” he commented.
“You were busy,” she curtly replied.
“What gives, Jules? Just say it.”
“I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that you don’t take direction well, Alpha. Although I guess you’re more used to giving directions than taking them,” she huffed. “I could hear the ruckus all the way in here. No disrespect intended, but I did say not to upset her, didn’t I?”
“Yeah well, it’s not easy being king,” he remarked with a smart-assed inflection, grabbing a bowl of soup. He sat down at the counter and began eating while she finished working.
“Sorry, I don’t mean to be so hard on you. I know you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do. It’s just that seeing her like that….all those scrapes and bruises and bite marks. My God, she was a mess. I suppose I’m going a little mother hen on you. I’m not used to having to deal with such violence. You are good to us, here.”
“No worries. We worked it out. She’s a tough one, you know. Believe me; she’ll be right as rain, soon. My spidey sense tells me so,” he joked.
“All right then, I’m going to leave you some crackers and ginger ale to put next to her bed in case she wakes up in the middle of the night starving. I was able to get a little bit of the electrolyte fluid into her before she woke up all the way. I have to say that it’s unusual for a human not to be dehydrated. I guess she must have been really, really healthy before this happened to her. It’s almost as if…well, never mind.”
Tristan stopped eating and stared over at Julie, who looked deep in thought. “What is it?”
“Oh, I’m just being crazy. I was just going to say that it’s almost as if she had the constitution of a wolf. Silly, huh?”
“Yeah, silly.” Tristan bit into a cracker, considering her assessment. Silly? Or right on target? He felt it too. Something about that woman wasn’t exactly human, but then again, she wasn’t at all supernatural.
Julie gathered up her purse and gave Tristan a quick hug and kiss on the cheek. “Okay, hun, well, call me if you need anything. I’ll stop by tomorrow to check on our girl. Maybe bring up some clothes for her, too. Get some rest, okay? Love ya!” she chirped as she entered the elevator and the doors slid shut.
Tristan reveled in the quietness surrounding him. He needed to think about his next steps, his strategy. He planned to bring in a sketch artist, so they could put a face to the arsonists. The meeting with Jax Chandler was in another two days, and he needed to get his shit together before it all went down. Throwing his bowl in the sink, he went to take a hot shower. He needed to think, without his libido interfering. It was as if he’d just been given a few more pieces of a jigsaw puzzle for which he didn’t have the picture. But he was cunning, and that’s what he did best, work with the impossible to make the possible happen. He was Alpha.
The girl’s eyelids were sewn shut in the shape of an ‘X’, and she still had what looked like makeup on her face. She had been in the water for at least a day or two. Maybe it was something else besides makeup? Tattooing? Sydney had a friend who tattooed eye makeup on women so they looked fresh-as-a-daisy, day or night, no muss, no fuss. Well, except there was plenty of muss here. Actually, the waterlogged loose skin looked like you could pull it right off the girl, as if it were a translucent glove. Ew…Sydney might be a cop, but that didn’t mean she didn’t get grossed out by the sick ways people died, or the things they did. Like the guy they found dead with a gourd shoved up his ass. Yep, another day in the city…still gross.
“Tony, her skin looks so pale. Paler than what I would expect from your average floater. It’s almost as if….” Sydney’s skin pricked in awareness. The feeling she had on the docks, the guy who’d been watching her earlier, had he freaking followed her? What the hell?
Kade stepped into the spotlights, dominating her space and finishing her words. “It almost looks as if her blood was drained from her body, and indeed, it was. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Kade Issacson from P-CAP, and I am now officially in charge of this case. You are welcome to stay on and assist…” Kade spoke confidently, concealing his excitement. He could not believe the woman at the docks was here at his scene. What was she? Her sweet scent called to him arousing all his senses. He struggled to remain professional, determined to find out who she was while controlling the situation.
Sydney tsked. She could not believe the sheer audacity of this guy. As she spun on her heels to address him, her eyes locked on the source of her chills. The heat began to rise to her face as she realized this guy was a serious, supernatural being…dangerous; added to that, he was drop dead gorgeous. She could barely bring words to her lips to argue with him. Desire pooled in her belly. She quickly focused her thoughts back on the body, letting her anger rise to the surface.
“Name’s Willows, Detective Sydney Willows.” She was infuriated P-CAP thought they could come in here and boss the little, human woman around. Nice try. “Seriously? You guys finally decide to show up and you’re all like, ‘It’s our case now.’ Well, here’s a newsflash…this girl is a human. According to the regs, ‘human vic, human cops’. So, you can move along friend, or watch. Whatever you’re into. Just stay out of my way.” Damn, if she was going to let some hot, supernatural guy tell her what to do at her scene.
Kade smiled. This was going to be fun. “Ms. Willows, while you are indeed correct that the vic is human, she was murdered in a very supernatural way. Therefore, according to the regs, this is officially a P-CAP case that requires your mandatory cooperation,” he lied. Kade knew full well that he didn’t really need her cooperation. He could just as easily pull in his officers and handle the case himself. But he couldn’t resist teasing the fine detective and looked forward to the opportunity to work with Ms. Willows. Besides, asking her to cooperate would lead to better human relations, so it could be a win-win as far as he was concerned.
Sydney rolled her eyes and blew out a breath. Well good and fuck. She was having a fine evening up until now, day off and all. And now this…she had no idea what the hell he even was. “Mister?” she spat out.
“Please, call me Kade.” He spoke with just the smallest hint of a British accent.
Albeit insincerely, she purred oozing sweetness and sarcasm, “Kade, our police department would love to cooperate with P-CAP just as soon we get the coroner’s exam completed.”
“That would be lovely, Ms. Willows. Now, may I please look at the body?” he smirked.
“Yes,” she curtly replied, moving out of his way so he could get a better look at the girl. Sydney could not believe her day. Okay, she could maybe do this…work with Kade, as long as he didn’t bite her, or claw her or bespell her, or whatever other supernatural shit he did. Even if she didn’t know what his deal was, she was convinced that he was capable of doing things that she would not like. She crossed her arms, irritated with the entire night. She knew one thing for sure; working closely with Kade was going to add exponentially to her overall, sexual frustration. Ugh, how was she ever going to get through this case being around this guy?
She glanced over at him as he conversed with Tony. Kade’s sexy frame towered over her. He was well over six-five with loose, dark blonde hair that reached his collar. The strikingly handsome, hard planes of his face accentuated his piercing, ice blue eyes. Sydney could tell he was athletic and muscular, and wished she could see what was hidden beneath his navy, linen sport jacket. He defied her notions of how she imagined most supernaturals dressed, expecting him to be clad in black leather and chains. Instead, he struck her as classic, masterly, sensual. Sydney smiled to herself thinking that Kade looked like he just stepped out of a freaking Ralph Lauren ad. His cream, linen pants hung loosely on his tapered hips revealing just a glimpse of what supernatural ‘assets’ he had under them. Shit, Sydney, are you really looking at the man’s crotch at a crime scene? You so need to get laid.
As she looked up, he caught her eyes and smiled. Oh, God…please don’t let him have seen me looking there. She quickly glanced at Tony who chuckled, “Hey, Syd, whatcha lookin’ at? There really is a lot to observe at the scene, huh?”
Damn, she was so busted. “Shut it, Tony! Need I remind you that I was supposed to be off tonight?” she retorted.
“Off or getting off?” he quipped.
Her face flushed red in embarrassment. “Ha, ha Tony. You boys keep talking. I’m actually going to work. I’ll be with Ada and find out what she’s got,” Sydney huffed. She was eager to put some space between herself and Kade. She needed to get her hormones under control and think. Why cover the body with tattoos? Why all the presentation? Obviously, the perp must get off on some kind of ritual during the actual killing. Some killers like to take their time, play with the victim, such sick bastards.
Just as he thought he’d regained control of himself, his mouth dropped wide open. With her back facing Luca, Samantha crossed her arms in front of her and removed her flimsy, stretchy tank top. Jesus, what was she doing? He continued to watch in awe as she kicked off her sneakers, hooked her thumbs on the waist of her pants and stripped them off until she was standing on the end of the dock stark naked. She reached a hand up into her ponytail and freed her fiery mane; the soft tendrils scattered over her creamy pale shoulders, teasing the small of her back. The perfectly-formed globes of her buttocks called to him; his erection pressed tightly against his zipper.
Luca could not believe she’d stripped nude in front of him and every small creature in the woods. He couldn’t help but smile as she launched herself off the dock in a perfect dive. Did she know he was watching her? How could she not have known? He’d told her he’d keep an eye on her at the lake. Little temptress, what was she doing?
With preternatural speed, he arrived at the dock just as her hands breached the shimmering dark-blue water. Samantha bobbed up to the surface and spun to face him. He could hardly believe the reckless abandon she demonstrated, given that she’d been held up in a strange coven less than a week ago. She was resilient, young and full of energy, representing a zest for life that he’d long forgotten.
Samantha smiled as she waved to him to join her in the deep abyss. She called out to him, “Come in, Luca! The water’s great!” She laughed and dove again; her white bottom peeked out for a second before submerging yet again.
“Darlin’, I’ve got no suit. Besides, vampires don’t swim.” He wanted desperately to go in after her, but knew it would lead to so much more than a morning swim.
“You’ve got your birthday suit. Please, you’re not gonna make a girl swim alone, are ya?” she purred.
“Is it cold?” He was starting to waver in his firm decision to stay on shore.
“Naw, it’s plenty warm. It’s late August, had plenty of time to heat up. Come on!” she begged.
“You a good swimmer?” Luca asked.
“Yes. Why’re you asking?” she replied.
“Because I’m coming in to get you!” Losing all control, Luca quickly pulled off his white t-shirt and began to undress.
As he unzipped his pants, Samantha screamed playfully and started to swim away. Stripped naked, Samantha admired his rippling abs out the side of her eyes. She knew he’d be coming for her.
Breaching the water, Luca cursed. “Damn, it’s cold. You lied to me, woman. You’d better swim fast because I’m goin’ to catch you!”
Luca dove under the water once again, determined to catch up with the very slippery, naked woman who’d enticed him to jump into a cold mountain lake in the middle of the day. It had been at least a hundred years since he’d indulged in such a childish activity, but he simply could not resist her. While vampires could be exposed to sunlight, he was weakened to the state of a human during the day. Breaking the surface, he searched for her and spied feet splashing several yards from him. He dove once again, knowing he’d soon catch his prey.
Samantha gasped for air after racing away from Luca. She spun in a circle, treading water as she looked for a trace of him. The smooth lake gave no clues as to where he was. She knew he was somewhere. Somewhere close. Looking towards the cabin, she screamed loudly as hands came around her waist.
Luca pulled her close to him and began to tickle her mercilessly. “Ah, little witch, you lied to me. The water is nearly freezing. And since I can’t spank you in the water, this is your punishment.” He continued to tickle her as she laughed hysterically, thrashing in the water.
“I’m sorry,” she pleaded. “Uncle! Uncle!”
Luca stopped tickling her but didn’t let her go. Instead he let his hands move from her waist to just under her breasts, encircling her ribcage. Samantha relaxed back onto him, letting her head fall back onto his shoulder as they both floated on their backs in the peaceful reserve.
“I’m happy you joined me. I love it up here in the woods. It’s so peaceful.” Samantha wrapped her arms around his, fully aware of where his arms supported her. As they moved as one in the water, she could feel the hardness of him brushing her bottom. Yet she wasn’t afraid. She was aroused and excited that he’d joined her in such a very human activity.
“I’m happy you convinced me to swim with you,” Luca responded. “I haven’t done this in such a long time. I’d forgotten how wonderful it is to skinny dip.”
“How old are you, Luca?”
“Very old, indeed, my dear Samantha. I was turned in the eighteen hundreds. So I’m well over two hundred years old….give or take a few years.”
“Do you miss being human?” Samantha asked.
“No, darlin’. Being human is so ordinary. And now that you’re a witch, you’ve joined our little club of supernaturals. I sense your fear. But I promise you that you’ll be all right. In fact, you’ll probably love it once you find your magic.” Luca squeezed her tightly and kissed her shoulder.
“Ah, and there’s the rub my friend. I have no magic. Nothing. Ilsbeth seems to think there’s something about me, but I can’t do a thing. Believe me, I’ve tried. Nothing happens,” Samantha huffed.
“It will come, Samantha. I can smell the magic on you, and it’s as sweet as honey. It’s there. Maybe it hasn’t shown itself yet, but it will.”
“You sound so confident, Luca. I wish I could be like you. But I feel so defeated. Seriously, Luca. I’ve been kidnapped, forced into working at a sex club, beaten and then told I was a witch. I’ve had to take a leave of absence from my real life. I can’t tell anyone human what’s really happened to me. And now, on top of everything, you think I’m in danger, and I have to return to that God forsaken city where it all started. I just want to lie back in this lake and forget everything,” she confided.
“Do you remember what you told me that night we were at Kade’s?” Luca asked.
“Yes. No. I don’t know. I said a lot of things. I was crying. I was upset. What do you mean? What did I say?” Samantha laughed a little, knowing how confused she sounded.
“You said you were a strong person. And while I don’t know you very well, I believe that’s true,” he continued. “Since you’ve been here at the cabin, you’ve stared down a wolf, talked with an Alpha and held a knife to a vampire. You’re either crazy or strong, and I can tell you that I know it’s the latter. You’ll survive what’s to come. You can do this, Samantha.”
“Luca, where have you been my whole life?” she joked. She smiled, realizing there was something about him that made her feel better. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe I can do this, but I can’t do it alone. You make me feel like I get through this as long as I’m with you.” She’d never known such encouragement in her entire existence, and here was a man who had faith in her even when she didn’t have it in herself.
Luca’s heart beat against his chest at her words. He knew he shouldn’t fall for a human, but she was chipping away at whatever resolve he had left to stay away. Unable to resist her any longer, he kissed the side of her neck and slowly trailed his lips behind her ear. She moaned in arousal as he slid his hands up to caress her breasts. He wanted to take her there in the lake.
“Luca,” she whispered as he kissed and touched her. “Yes.”
With her words, he turned her around to face him, pressing his lips to hers. Their tongues swept together as they passionately kissed. Samantha wrapped her legs around Luca’s waist, aroused by the feel of his rock-hard cock bobbing up against the crease of her ass. She fingered his long hair and kissed up his cheeks as he licked her neck.
“Luca, please,” she panted. God, she wanted him. She wanted to forget everything in that moment but him.
“Samantha.” Luca wanted to stop, to tell her that they shouldn’t continue. She was so vulnerable after what had happened. As much as he wanted her, he didn’t want to take advantage either. And then there was his vow not to get involved with humans. But she tasted sweet as peaches on a warm summer day. So soft and slippery in his hands. “Mmmm…you’re so beautiful,” he murmured, unable to stop kissing her. He needed to have all of her.
As he was about to suggest they go inside the cabin, Luca tensed. He immediately released Samantha to stop and sniff the air. Smoke. He growled, baring his fangs.
“Luca, what’s wrong?” Samantha asked, frightened.
“Swim Samantha,” he ordered. “The cabin. It’s on fire.”

At the challenge, Logan strode across the room, pinning her against the wall. He had to smell her, taste her. Why would she deny her wolf? Why play games? Logan didn’t want to hurt her. Oh no. If anything, he’d like to give her pleasure like she’d never known. But she kept insisting she was human. If she wanted to play, play he would. She was wolf, and he’d prove it to her. But as her sweet scent engulfed his senses, he began to lose control. His wolf clawed at his psyche, begging to take the woman. Like freshly cut roses, the heavenly aroma was familiar yet altogether unique and desirable, although her wolf lingered on the edge; she was there, he could scent her.
In an effort to prevent himself from ravishing her right there in his office, Logan plastered his hands so hard against the window, he thought it’d crack. At the sound of her moan, he darted his tongue out against her silky skin. He had to taste her. Just once. Ah fuck, no; his wolf wanted more. Eyes feral, he locked them with hers, taking her arm. He placed a small kiss to her palm before dragging his tongue along her wrist all the way to the crook of her elbow, releasing a growl of satisfaction.
Wynter’s heart pounded as he gently took her arm into his hands. She shivered as he pushed up her sleeve and brought her delicate wrist to his lips. Wet with arousal, she couldn’t break their connection as she stared deep into his mesmerizing eyes. Oh my God. Wolf. Human. I’ll be whatever you want me to be…just please, just take me. Wynter thought her knees would give out, except he had her pressed up against the window. Lost in his spell, she responded by nudging her own hips against his hard arousal as he tasted her skin.
Logan groaned as the territorial need to take her consumed him. He needed to get things under control. Jax. Fucking, goddamned Jax. His name alone should have killed his raging hard on, but it wasn’t helping one damn bit. No, he needed to separate himself from her before he tore her clothes off. He closed his eyes and blew out a breath, but didn’t release her.
“Wolf,” he breathed into her hair.
