Plight [plahyt]
Noun: a difficult, or otherwise unfortunate situation.
Verb: pledge or solemnly promise. Be engaged to be married.
I promised myself to a man. Well, technically, I promised myself to a boy. We were eight years old. Neighbours. He gave me a Cheezel, pushed it onto my finger, and asked me to marry him.
I ate the Cheezel.
I also said, “Yes” but that we’d have to wait until we were thirty.
It was my thirtieth birthday last week and now he’s calling in that promise.
Seriously, Elliot Parker is insane if he thinks that an out of the blue private Facebook message stipulating the binding law of an oral contractual agreement is going to seal our twenty-two-year bullshit engagement.
Insane.
I wonder if he really does look like his profile picture, though.
Elliot is fun and loveable despite his crazy idea of making sure Danielle keeps her promise. While Danielle can't believe his tactics, he does make it hard to resist him. Especially when he says something so incredible and so beautiful that it melts your heart.
"I do know you, Danielle. A person doesn't change with age. Only their layers do. Their core doesn't. I know your core."
Le sigh...
The two of them have a hilarious and rocky road to follow. Elliot is adamant about them being together but Danielle has reservations. Some funny moments along the way will have you laughing out loud. One favourite is this:
I whacked his arm. "Hey! I had first dibs."
"At my heart, yes. At this Cheezel, no."
Cheezels are a serious business ;) And while things start off reasonably well, Danielle and Elliot have a misunderstanding. One that makes Dani believe that Elliot is just like all the other men before him but is that really true? Could Elliot be different? There are some great characters in this story like Laura, Elliot's sister. She is blunt, rude and perhaps a little tackless but she certainly knows her stuff and isn't afraid to tell her brother exactly what he should be doing. And Chris. He is a fantastic friend. You would definitely want him in your corner.
This story is definitely about the playful side of love. A time when love was simple. The kind of love that evolves from that of children into a more intimate and meaningful love. But it is also a second chance love story. This book shows that you can never give up. There's always hope and fear should never stop you from trying.
