Wings Over Poppies is book #2 in The Over Series and can be read as a standalone novel.
Perfection. One word. Three syllables. Every reason why I’ll never have the one thing I truly want. I stand dutifully on the pedestal he’s built, waiting for the day he truly sees me.
Then one amazing night, he lets down his walls, only to leave me the next day.
Years have passed, and I’ve tried to move on with my life. But I still dream of him. I still miss him everyday. The memories haunt me. How can I look to the future when my past remains a mystery? The time has come to find the boy who stole my heart and ran away without a word.
But not everyone who is lost wants to be found.
My name is Alexandra Fontaine, and this is my story of unfinished love.
Oh my glob! I’m so privileged to have read this story! It is gorgeous! Granted, J.A. DeRouen made me cry over and over again. Repeatedly. But I think I can forgive her ;) if you love, and adore beautiful love stories, you are in for a real treat. This is perhaps my favourite love story this year! There are so many beautiful lines in this story. At the very beginning, these two lines really spoke to me:
“Nothing in this world worth having is perfect.”
And:
“It’s been my experience that perfection is forgettable . . . expendable.”
In a world that is focused and driven on perfection, these two lines are a breath of fresh air. It celebrates the different, the unique, and the imperfect. And I completely love J.A. DeRouen for it.
Now the couple! But before that... let's look at West ;) okay, he is my version of West lol.
I look up and see the most intoxicating sight ever kneeling between my legs. My eyes travel over his handsome face, his muscular chest, his defined abs, and then his … oh shit. One singular thought clouds my brain.
That thing is not gonna fit.
It’s been about six years and Alex has no idea where West is or if he is even alive. She can’t catch a break with dates either. The poor thing tends to attract the worst of them. But of course, nothing will ever compare to West. She can’t seem to let go and could you blame her? She can no longer take the agony of the unknown and asks a friend, who also happens to be a therapist, for help in finding out his fate.
Well you can imagine her surprise when she learns that he is alive and actually close enough for her to touch! When she gathers enough courage to go and see him, guess what happens? No, not what we were hoping for. But she can’t stop thinking about West! She tries speed dating but it is a disaster. I do love how direct she is. She is feisty and I love her for it. And just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, one of the dates doesn’t understand no. He pins Alex against a wall and you fear the worst… until a certain someone comes to the rescue. West is incredibly annoyed and angry at her behaviour. He feels that she isn’t taking enough safety precautions. The two of them certainly have a show down and let me tell you, it ends in a pretty steamy situation ;) but his words as he left Alex broke my heart.
“There’s nothing here for you, Alex.”
Alex tries her hardest to break through West’s barriers. But it seems the harder she pushes, the colder and crueller he gets. It gets to the point where Alex can’t take it anymore. She can’t fight for both of them anymore because she knows that he will break her if she continues. It’s the final goodbye. Alex says goodbye as her heart breaks. She leaves for home and tries to piece herself together. When Alex returns home, she receives an envelope from West. It contains letters that he wrote to her but didn’t send because he didn’t want to give her false hope. Those letters help her understand where he has been and why he pushed her away. Finally, finally, West lets her in and it is gorgeous. The things they do for each other and with each other. It makes your heart melt. And then West says something so beautiful:
“My heart is full, whole, and ready to love you because it never made the trip across the ocean. My heart has never left you – you’ve kept it safe this entire time.”
